Green Spark Farm is a four season organic vegetable farm in coastal Maine. Using high tunnels, greenhouses and season extension, we produce vegetables year-round (particularly winter greens), and cut flowers, garden seedlings, and herbs in season. We employ between five and eight employees on the farm from April to November, and one person year-round. We practice sustainable agriculture. We grow rare and heirloom vegetables and uniquely flavorful and colorful produce. We produce beautiful organic vegetables for the Greater Portland community, selling year-round at the Portland Farmer's Markets, and in summer through our on-farm stand, CSA, grocers, and restaurants. All our farm products are certified organic by MOFGA Certification Services, LLC.
What we are looking for: We are looking to hire employees who are able to commit to a full time work schedule for the main season from April to November. We also hire college students on a calendar compatible with their school. There is opportunity for one person to stay on year round and work with us producing winter greens and prepping storage crops for market through the winter.
Hours: The hours at Green Spark Farm are consistently 40-50 hrs a week. We work 8.5 to 10 hours a day, depending on the season.
Work: There are many types of work on our farm. Primarily work days are filled with harvesting, washing and packing vegetables for market, work in the seedling nursery, tunnels and greenhouses, planting, weeding, and construction projects. All of these tasks require focus to ensure efficiency for the farm's viability. Please be prepared for fast physical labor in any weather.
Pay: We pay $12/hour starting wage with an August and September bonus as well. We take a half-hour unpaid lunch break. There is no housing on the farm.
We want you to come away from your time at Green Spark with more knowledge in farming than when you started. If you have questions or special interests, please communicate them to us. We are willing to share everything we know about running a farm business with those serious about farming as a career.
To Apply: Please email with your resume and brief letter of interest with three work references. We require on-farm working interview before hire. While farming experience isn't necessary, we prioritize applicants with the following experience: commercial agricultural experience or equivalent physical labor in construction, carpentry, landscaping, trails crew, etc.
